Place hook into groove with hook point end away from the tool (the hook shaft with the eye fits in the groove of the tool). Hold in place with your thumb.
Line can go through the hook eye (but not necessary) and along groove in the direction away from the tool - leave approximately 8-12 inches of line to wrap.
Begin to wrap line around the tool holding the hook in place with your thumb.
Wrap 4-6 times around the tool/hook shaft in the direction of the hook end toward the hook eye.
Hold the line "coils" in place with your finger so that they don't unravel. Insert the line tag end "through" the coils from the direction of the hook eye toward the hook point end.
With hook and line held in place with your thumb and finger, pull the line tag end firmly and quickly in the direction away from the tool.
Slide the knot up the shaft toward the hook eye, then clip off any excess tag end.
Tying a hook on the shank is slightly different from tying on a lure or swivel where you put the line through the eye and the main line then becomes the "shank" of the hook and you wrap the tag end around the line instead of the hook.
Splicing two lines together (when one line is not fly line), simply tie the knot around the first line, flip it around and tie the first line around the second line
